چکیده

There is phenomenological evidence that magnetic reconnection operates in the interstellar medium, and magnetic reconnection is also necessary for the operation of a galactic dynamo. The extremely long ohmic di†usion times of magnetic Ðelds in typical interstellar structures suggest that reconnection occurs in two stages, with thin current layers that have relatively short resistive decay times forming by magnetohydrodynamical processes Ðrst, followed by reconnection of the Ðelds in the layers. We propose that ambipolar drift can lead to the formation of these thin sheets in weakly ionized interstellar gas and can delineate the parameter regime in which this occurs by means of a numerical model : we Ðnd that the magnetic Ðeld cannot be too large and the medium cannot be too di†usive. Both limits are imposed by the requirement that the Ðeld be wound up about 1 time by the eddy. Subject headings : di†usion È ISM: magnetic Ðelds È MHD

A test for whether or not Voyager 1 has crossed the heliopause

The Voyager 1 spacecraft is currently in the vicinity of the heliopause, which separates the heliosphere from the local interstellar medium. There has been a precipitous decrease in particles accelerated in the heliosphere and a substantial increase in galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). The evidence is unclear, however, as to whether Voyager 1 has crossed the heliopause into the local interstellar me...

In Dust We Trust: an Overview of Observations and Theories of Interstellar Dust

The past century of interstellar dust has brought us from first ignoring it to finding that it is an important component of the interstellar medium and plays an important role in the evolution of galaxies, the formation of stars and planetary systems, and possibly, the origins of life. Current observational results in our galaxy provide a complex physical and chemical evolutionary picture of in...

On the relation between the Schmidt and Kennicutt-Schmidt star formation laws and its implications for numerical simulations

When averaged over large scales, star formation in galaxies is observed to follow the empirical Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) law for surface densities above a constant threshold. While the observed law involves surface densities, theoretical models and simulations generally work with volume density laws (i.e. Schmidt laws). We derive analytic relations between star formation laws expressed in terms o...

Star Formation in the LMC: Gravitational Instability and Dynamical Triggering

Evidence for triggered star formation is difficult to establish because energy feedback from massive stars tend to erase the interstellar conditions that led to the star formation. Young stellar objects (YSOs) mark sites of current star formation whose ambient conditions have not been significantly altered. Spitzer observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) effectively reveal massive YSOs...

Mapping the interstellar medium in galaxies with Herschel!/SPIRE

The standard method of mapping the interstellar medium in a galaxy, by observing the molecular gas in the CO 1-0 line and the atomic gas in the 21-cm line, is largely limited with current telescopes to galaxies in the nearby universe. In this letter, we use SPIRE observations of the galaxies M 99 and M 100 to explore the alternative approach of mapping the interstellar medium using the continuu...
